Dog Bite Liability: Pet Adoption vs. Buying- Part 2

Dog Bite Liability: Pet Adoption vs. Buying- Part 2Dog Bite Liability: Pet Adoption vs. Buying- Part 2

It part 1 of this post, we discussed some reasons that people choose adoption when it comes to finding a dog, rather that purchasing a puppy. There are also many reasons that people choose to buy rather than adopt, which we will discuss below.

In 2010, PetsMart Charities partnered with Ipsos Marketing to ask people why they choose to buy their dogs from a pet store or breeder rather than adopt from a shelter, and vice versa. Though this research isn’t new, it still remains valid today.

According to the study, most people who choose to buy rather than adopt were looking for a purebred animal or a particular type that they couldn’t find in the shelter. The most common reason that people get pets from purebred breeders is because they have a desire for a specific breed, but also want to know the pet’s health history and see that the pet’s parents are also in a healthy condition. When potential dog owners look for a specific breed, it’s usually for a very practical reason. For example, a family with small children may want a Labrador Retriever since they are known to be excellent family dogs with a good temperament. Another individual may want a Beagle, which is known to be energetic and healthy, so trips to the vet may be less frequent than with other breeds.

Many people also choose to purchase their dog from a reputable breeder because they tend to be very knowledgeable about that breed. The breeder will also give you a health guarantee for a limited time. Lastly, people whom get dogs from breeders typically are purchasing an AKC show-quality dog. Other reasons cited by the Petsmart survey for purchasing a dog rather than buying include people who go into a pet store with no intention of purchasing but fall in love, and people who desire a puppy that they can train for their needs.

No matter how you acquire your pet, it’s important to be aware of the dog bite liability that faces any and all dog owners. At Federation of Insured Dog Owners, Inc. we now offer the Covered Canine Policy, an exclusive product and benefit for F.I.D.O members only.
