Breed Spotlight: The Dalmatian

Most commonly known for their distinctive black or brown spots, the Dalmatian is a medium sized breed built for efficiency and endurance. Sources from AnimalPlanet.com cite the Dalmatian dog as very energetic and playful; a dog that is willing to run for miles. Due to this, it’s important for these dogs to get regular daily exercise.

Just like kids, if dogs don’t have something constructive to do with their energy, they’ll find something to do on their own and it will typically be something destructive. This is true for any breed, not just Dalmatians. Another issue that can arise due to misdirected energy is play biting and rough play, which opens the door for dog bite liability exposures.

Dalmatians are a friendly breed by nature. Their energy is matched by their willingness to please their owners, which means they are highly trainable given the right attention. They sometimes seem to forget their own strength, and for this reason may not be a great dog around small children. However, with proper training and discipline they can be very sweet to children. They may also be skittish around other dogs that they are not familiar with. This is important to note, since they may bite out of fear or apprehension. If you or another person gets caught in the middle, this could lead to a dog bite liability claim.

Dog bite liability should be a concern for all dog owners, as no matter how friendly the breed is, every dog has the potential to bite, especially if they are scared, fearful, or not feeling well. An additional characteristic to keep in mind about Dalmatians is that their primary health issue is deafness. Deaf and unilateral hearing Dalmatians still make wonderful pets and most owners are unaware of any problems, but this does mean that many Dalmatians can be easily startled by a child or another pet, increasing the likelihood of a dog bite occurring.

At the Federation of Insured Dog Owners (F.I.D.O.), we offer the Covered Canine Policy, which is a form of Dog Bite Liability Insurance that protects you financially should your dog bite an individual and cause harm. The policy does not exclude any breed of dog. Please contact us today for more information at (855) 534-6495.
